The impossibility of total freedom

Damián Emilio Gibaja Romero

Abstract

Freedom is a concept whose understanding has been fundamental for the development of individuals and societies. The introduction of technological and social advances makes it necessary to clarify the idea of being free or fully exercising freedom. Given the complexity of the concept, this article presents the relationship between freedom and choice through decision and game theory. With the previous tools, we show that freedom is impossible because it leads to the dilemma that exercising freedom can prevent us from exercising it. Thus, introducing rational choices and limiting choice sets show that total freedom is impossible. In other words, freedom refers to a restricted decision process.
